In 2012, Kieron identified an information gap: the separation of telecom infrastructure assets from retail telecoms, and the inauguration of an independent telecom tower industry, had taken place in the US and largely in India, but this transformational change was only starting to take root in other markets, and few people understood it. While many stakeholders didn’t understand the towerco business model, others didn’t understand what assets the towercos owned, what they might acquire next, and what M&A, improvement capex and energy efficiency investments they needed to undertake to drive value. TowerXchange was formed to fill that information gap; an editorially independent research firm and community host created to consolidate insights from the top 200-250 stakeholders in each regional tower industry. We started out in Africa, but the quality and focus of our research quickly drew us into CALA, Asia and more recently Europe and China: the footprint of TowerXchange now extends beyond emerging markets to cover every tower market in the world – except the mature US market, which we may start covering in 2017.
